Inter-Disciplinary Artist
My practice is driven by my habit of collecting stories and
experiences in sketchbook journals which I then use to generate creative
outcomes. I try to create work that functions simultaneously as
personal testimony and broader cultural critique and am most interested
in stories that question established ideas about belonging, desire and
community. I am also interested in trying to bring marginalised stories
into the frame and how this can be done in a way that resists
exploitation or flattening these stories.
My technical skills have developed organically over many years, largely shaped by the multiple geographical moves that I had to make as a junior doctor and then as a senior psychiatrist. I picked up skills in visual arts, music and writing depending on what was available in the area that I was living in at the time.
I paused my medical career in 2024 to start a year-long MSc in Creative Technology and completed this in September 2025. On the course, I developed skills in creative coding, game design, and also learnt about the affordances of interactive technologies such as VR and
I was born in the UK and consider myself British, but also have lived through times when this Britishness has been contested by the loud and sometimes dangerous voices of others. I am also a queer man and have Punjabi heritage - two identities which have sometimes been in conflict with each other. Men and masculinity are key themes of my work, which I think is a way for me to think through my own masculinity as a queer man.
I am also known as Kuljit.
