My Art Practice

My sensitivity to interpersonal dynamics developed in response to being born with a queer sensibility. A body gendered as male that has been unable to conform to the masculinity set out before it. I have been aware of my difference even before it was put into words and in this pre-articulated state, is where I found art.

Living in a body-mind that was unable to contain the conflict between sexuality and culture, creativity therefore started out as my way to survive. It became a method through which these conflicts could be reformulated and sometimes be released.

As I later developed expertise in psychotherapy, I realised that my art practice mirrors some of the processes that occur between therapist and client. A dynamic which I continue to explore.

My practice is now about the need to belong and be understood and how this can pull against the need to for intimacy and individual freedom. It also contains elements of nostalgia.

I am still unsure whether I am ready to be seen and included. Aesthetically this often results in distorted perspectives, glitched textures and obscuring lenses. I often use the digital space to look for new points of view.

Why Artist+?

I am also a medical doctor with a speciality in the treatment of mental illness. I am experienced coach, mentor and educator and in the past set up a not-for profit company supporting LGBTQIA+ people with South Asian heritage.

My practice is heavily informed by psychotherapy, psychology, intersectionality and queer theory.
